Reporting to the Manger, Perioperative and Ambulatory services, the Ophthalmic Technician works as a collaborative member of the inter-disciplinary team to provide visual field test support to patients requiring hospital resources, technical support and/or skilled personnel in an outpatient clinic setting.
Ophthalmic Technologists administers tests to evaluate a client’s peripheral vision, tested for central vision, and measure the sensitivity of their eyes. This is an important role in the diagnosis and management of eye diseases. The results of these tests can be used to detect glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and other retinal diseases.
By accurately assessing the patient’s vision, the technologist can provide important information to the ophthalmologist. This information can lead to early detection and treatment of these diseases, thus helping to maintain the patient’s eye health and prevent vision loss.
Qualifications / Skills / Abilities:
Required
- Preferred previous experience in an ophthalmologist office or healthcare facility
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of Infection Control Practices
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
- Excellent organizational and patient assessment skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with patients, families and other healthcare professionals
- Excellent problem-solving, decision-making and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to continuing education and professional development
- Ability to work day shifts during the week (8 hours)
- Recent satisfactory performance and attendance records
