DEPARTMENT: INPATIENT MENTAL HEALTH – INTERNSHIP*

STATUS: FULL-TIME, TEMPORARY (APPROX. END DATE JANUARY 2025)
WAGE RATE: $34.943 – $35.967

Reporting to the Manager, Inpatient Mental Health, the Registered practical Nurse works collaboratively in an inter-disciplinary team to provide patient care within the professional scope of practice. In addition, this position shares patient care assignments on a rotational basis between the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, Unit 4-5, 4-6 and Crisis Support Program, withdrawal management program and outpatient mental health. In keeping with a client-focused philosophy, the functions of this role are to assist our patients and co-workers in achieving positive outcomes in a safe and therapeutic environment.

As part of Brightshores Health System’s Sustainable Staffing program, this position will spend approximately six months learning all aspects of our inpatient and outpatient Mental Health and Addictions programs. During this time they will be an ‘extra’ in the departments with their time dedicated to developing their MH nursing skills by participating in an extensive on-the-job training and orientation program. Once this learning is complete, the RPN will be offered a position available with in the MH departments.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  •  Interest in pursuing a long-term career in Mental Health & Addictions and a commitment to GBHS
  • Basic knowledge of standards of care for the mental health and addictions patient population
  • Willingness to obtain – Valid CPI Course, Mental Health nursing certificate, Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and DSM-V
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and respond effectively to emergent situations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, customer service and collaboration skills with patients, families and other healthcare professionals
  • Excellent leadership, problem solving, decision making, organizational and patient assessment skills
  • Commitment to continuing education and agreement to take mandatory courses
  • Plan, develop and conduct inpatient groups
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary team setting
  • Ability to work all shifts, weekends and holidays
  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance record
