DEPARTMENT: INPATIENT MENTAL HEALTH

WAGE RATE: $39.07 – $56.00

Reporting to the Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) works collaboratively in an inter-disciplinary team to provide patient care patients with acute mental health, addictions, dementia and other neurological conditions within the professional scope of practice.  In keeping with a client-focused philosophy, the functions of this role are to assist patients and co-workers in achieving optimal outcomes in a safe and therapeutic environment, as well as supporting positive transitions back to the community.

Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:

Required

  • Current Ontario College of Nurses registration or eligibility
  • Successful completion of CNA for Mental Health or willingness to obtain
  • Recent Psychiatric Nursing experience within the past three years
  • Working knowledge of Mental Health Act and the DSM-V-TR
  • Valid non-violence crisis intervention Course
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct psycho/social and mental status assessment including risk assessment
  • Knowledge of community resources and navigation of broader mental health system
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and respond effectively to emergent situations
  • Ability to provide a brief solution-focused therapy modality as well as support, advocacy and education services to patients and as needed to their support person(s)
  • Knowledge and application of BPGs for the Older Adult including P.I.E.C.E. S., GPA and RNAO’s “3D’s” or a willingness to learn/accept training and integrate into practice
  • Provide support, advocacy and education services to patients and as needed to their support person(s)
  • Experience and knowledge in Medication Delivery and relevant side effects
  • Excellent leadership, problem solving, decision making, organizational and patient assessment skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills demonstrated
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary team setting
  • Commitment to continuing education and agreement to take mandatory courses
  • Plan, develop and conduct inpatient groups
  • Ability to work all shifts, weekends and holidays, according to the schedule commitment to the unit
  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance record

Preferred

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing
  • Canadian Nursing Association Mental Health Nursing Certificate or eligibility
