DEPARTMENT: OUTPATIENT MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS

Reporting to the Manager, Mental health and Addiction Services, the Registered Practical Nurse works collaboratively in an inter-disciplinary team to provide patient care within the professional scope of practice. In keeping with a client-focused harm reduction philosophy, the functions of this role are to assist our patients and co-workers in achieving positive outcomes in a safe and therapeutic environment, following Recovery Principles.

This position will spend approximately six months learning all aspects of our Addiction Services within all of our Mental Health and Addictions programs at Brightshores Health System. They will develop their Addiction and MH nursing skills by participating in an extensive on-the-job training and orientation program which also includes receiving core education, skill building and advanced knowledge in addiction treatment. Once this learning is complete, the RPN will remain as a full-time staff member in Acute Withdrawal Management Services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Current Registration with the Ontario College of Nurses
  • Completion of a Psychiatric Nursing education program
  • Familiarity with principles and practice of the Recovery Model
  • Knowledge of current best practices in the treatment of substance abuse and concurrent disorders for individuals and families.
  • Psycho/social and mental status assessment skills
  • Knowledge of Ability to communicate positively and professionally with family members, community providers and physicians
  • Ability to work closely as a member of a team and share responsibilities
  • Ability to co-ordinate multiple interests to provide quality patient care
  • Willingness to learn new concepts and complete additional education including CAMH Addiction and Mental Health Courses, UBC Addiction Care and Treatment Course, RPNAO Addiction and Mental Health Courses, and Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction Learning opportunities.
