Brightshores Health System is pleased to partner with Sheridan College on a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing health inequities in rural communities.

In collaboration with Dr. Syed Tanbeer, a Professor of Applied Computing in Sheridan’s Faculty of Applied Science and Technology (FAST), this research project is supported through Sheridan’s Mobilize Seed Funds — a component of a five-year $3.35 million Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Mobilize Grant that Sheridan received in fall 2022.

The Mobilize Seed Funds support collaborative projects between Sheridan researchers and industry and community partners with a common theme of accelerating community health and well-being.  This research also leverages the expertise of the Centre for Applied AI, which is an integral part of Generator at Sheridan.  This project will address inequities and access to care in rural communities.

With this project, a collaborative effort will be taken to conduct a comprehensive review of community health data, with a specific focus on patients without a primary care physician in rural areas. By analyzing health care utilization patterns, the project aims to identify critical needs and inform patient care decisions, while also laying the groundwork for future research and innovation endeavors.

One key aspect of this initiative is the use of novel technology that will leverage the ability to securely access data from multiple partners. Through the use of this technology, Brightshores Health System and Sheridan are seeking to derive actionable insights from vast datasets, ultimately contributing to the health and wellness of communities at the local, provincial, and national levels.
